Abstract

I was interviewed on ABC Radio Melbourne about my research in emergent communication! We discussed how we study AI agents developing their own languages by giving them simple communication tasks with minimal restrictions, allowing us to observe how communication systems evolve from scratch. I explained how we use information theory to decode these AI languages, similar to how we might approach an unknown language. By analyzing patterns between what AI agents say and what they observe, we can begin to understand their communication system. While this research primarily aims to make AI systems more interpretable, the methods we’re developing could potentially help us understand any unknown communication system - from latent spaces in other AI models to even maybe alien languages! Read more about this research in my recent article in The Conversation here.
